A day that began beneath the warming glow of a chrysalis sun has once more given way to the cover of clouds — soft and gray, and gathering close, holding no rain for us but the possibility of a little snow high up on the peaks.
Such snows, brief and passing fast, were visible yesterday, part of our first early monsoonal pattern of the year. Now, as then, the sun plays hide-and-seek with thunderheads, its light spreading like silvered wings from behind their violet banks.
There are no butterflies here yet, no chrysalis nor caterpillar either, but the new warmth and the sky patterns of the rainy season suggest that it will not be long now. In some ways in this part of our word, they are seen as messenger spirits, bringers of hope, carrying words of wind and light.
Today’s featured work is one of my favorite manifestations of this small sacred spirit, wrought in an old and eminently traditional style and shape, carrying the transformative light of the sun on her wings. From its description in the Earrings Gallery here on the site:
Chrysalis Sun Earrings
Dawn takes flight on silver wings, bearing the orb of a chrysalis sun. Wings summons the sun and the transformative spirit of the day with these butterfly earrings, newly emerged from the cocoon of night. Each drop drifts gently from side to side, its flared top and bottom adance in sharp relief. At the center of the wings sits a tiny amber orb, each cabochon as timeless as the light and glowing with its own cosmic fire, each set in the cool, secure embrace of a plain, low-profile bezel. Earrings hang 1-3/8″ long by 1″ across at the widest point; amber cabochons are 3/16″ across (dimensions approximate).

At this moment, only little bits of blue show here and there in the few breaks between the cloudbanks. The sun’s golden glow is shrouded in silver and white, veiled, too, in a loose shawl of lavender gray. But the land is even greener than yesterday, the air warm and mostly still. For the moment, spring is here, and it is possible to believe in the promise of summer again.
After the year past, we need that promise, and that hope.
And we need to be ready to welcome their messengers, small sacred spirits that will soon deliver words of wind and light.
