Daybreak remains cold, a hard edge to the sharply clear air. As night falls away, making space for warmer, brighter hours, an exceptionally bright Dawn Star ushers in the arrival of Father Sun, presiding over his ascent in skies now shifting rapidly from midnight to turquoise.
It is a time of year when the Morning Star looms large, her light intense and brilliant — so much so that for now, it is possible to capture her image photographically even from here.
In many of our cultures, she is a being of great power, one who symbolizes guidance and direction. Much more than a mere point on the compass, she is simultaneously touchstone and navigational guide, one endowed with her own spirit, her own power, her own ability and will to bestow gifts and blessings.
Wings pays tribute to her today with an all-new work, a small and slender cuff that nevertheless carries the imagery of great power. From its description in the Bracelets Gallery here on the site:
Daybreak Cuff Bracelet
It is the Dawn Star who brings the day. Wings pays tribute to her power and gift with this slender cuff bracelet. the focal point is a sizeable hand-made bead of sterling silver ingot, a three-dimensional spheroid that evokes the shape of the sky and is centered by a rising Morning Star created by separate hand-stamped patterns. The star is flanked by two round cabochons of delicately spiderwebbed turquoise in robin’s-egg blue, the color of the dawn. The band is edged on either side by a descending chased pattern of crescent moons, reflecting her withdrawal to make way for the bright blue light of daybreak. Down the center of the band on either side, a repeating motif of Eyes of Spirit reminds us that, day, night, or the threshold spaces between, guidance and wisdom are always there. It is a deceptively simple work, one that invokes the bright blues of the spring skies buttressed by powers that dwell out of reach of mere mortal perceptions of day and night. It reminds us of the old stories: of the Sky Woman, of the eternal dance between Sun and Moon, of the guiding role of the stars . . . of the omnipresence of Spirit, even when it remains invisible to our eyes.
As we race headlong toward the calendar’s confirmation that Spring is truly here, buffeted by the harsh winds that tell us what no calendar can, it’s a welcome respite: a reminder to appreciate the nascent blues and greens that are fast supplanting the muted earth tones of winter; to prepare ourselves, and this world we have been given, for the warmth of the planting and growing seasons soon to come.
Like the Dawn Star, it ushers in the daybreak, the dawn of a new day, and of a new season.
