In some traditions, the spirits live in lodges in the sky, so distant that the lights from their fires are perceived by us here below as constellations of stars. Here, whole universes are formed from a pair of small, lightly scalloped conchas. On each domed silver shell, eight small lodges sit in a circle, each tipi flanked by spokes that reach from the center to the cardinal and ordinal directions, all linked in a single hoop to form an eight-pointed star. A small round cabochon of old robin’s-egg blue turquoise sits at the center of the sky; from its bottom edge, a long silver raindrop sends a bit of the heavens to earth in the form of rain, a tiny teardrop of old Bisbee turquoise. Each concha is 7/8″ across; entire earring hangs 1-5/8″ in length, excluding wires (dimensions approximate; wires are extended-length in back).
