The Heart and Spirit of a World In Love

More sun, more clouds, more unseasonal warmth: Our small world here is fast waking from its winter slumber now.

It’s a fragile and risky time for the Earth and her children, days in which emerging too soon can have drastic consequences. The mercury has already reached the projected high, which means that we will instead pass fifty today . . . and snow is again forecast for mid-week. Mother Earth is ready to dance, but the time is not quite yet.

Still, she eager to turn face and body to the warming sun, ready to sway with the rhythm of the winds: the heart and spirit of a world in love again.

Today’s featured work embodies this joyous spirit, newly-engaged with season and time, ready to celebrate despite the weeks of winter yet to come. From its description in the relevant section of the Bracelets Gallery here on the site:

A World In Love Cuff Bracelet

A world in harmony is a world in love, adance with joy and flowering with romance. Wings sets the Earth’s heart dancing on this delicate cuff bracelet, set with a spectacularly asymmetrical stone in the shades of earth and water and sky. At the center sits a heart-shaped cabochon of Hachita turquoise from southwestern New Mexico’s Little Hatchet Mountains, a stone cut in whimsically irregular shape, as though dancing in the saw-toothed bezel that holds it securely in place. The cabochon’s surface is highly-domed and beautifully textured, with shades of robin’s-egg blue underlying a rich summery green and a marbling of coppery-gold matrix. It sits against a bezel backing cut freehand and flaring just enough to limn the bezel itself. The whole setting rises from a slender silver band, heavy-gauge sterling buffed to a glowing high polish. The band is 6″ long and 5/16″ across; the heart cabochon is 9/16″ between its highest and lowest points by 1/2″ across at its widest point (dimensions approximate). Other views shown below.

This work, one of Wings’s newest, is sister to the one featured here yesterday: similar design, focal stone sourced from the same Hachita deposit. If I’m honest, though, this one is my favorite of the pair. Its defiant asymmetry appeals to me, both its flouting of conventional cabbing shapes and its feeling of a joyful animating spirit, one unable to restrain itself from dancing on and in the light.

And that, perhaps, is the best of what love is: an engagement with our world, not grudging, but dancing, eager, filled with joy at every bend and turn and step.

Our world cannot quite yet dance with full abandon; the cold still lies in wait. But the Earth’s heart, like our own, is already looking forward — with joy, and with love.
