In our cultures, we wear our medicine, in symbol and in fact. Here, Wings has captured the beauty of an significant form of medicine, and the tradition to which it is dedicated, in this powerful pair of earrings. They are anchored by a pair of free-form natural Kingman turquoise cabochons of extraordinary color and depth: blues and greens melded together in a rich teal shade reminiscent of the deep green of the desert peyote plant, criss-crossed with spiderweb matrix glowing red and gold that the plant’s buds in the sunlight. Each is set into a scalloped bezel soldered onto an inverted teardrop setting, point skyward like the beak of the Water Bird. The pendant of each earring, flared like the Water Bird’s tailfeathers, is hand-cut and -shaped from sterling silver, then edged at either side with solid yet delicate sterling silver triangle wire to give each piece extra depth. Near the curved end of each pendant, a tiny round jade cabochon sits in the embrace of a flaring hand-stamped star that radiates motion and light. Each pendant is attached with sterling silver jump rings, permitting the pendants to dangle and dance independently of the upper portion, creating a feel of soaring upward flight. Earrings are set on sterling silver posts. Each earring is 2-5/16″ in total length; the upper portions are one inch long by .75″ across at the widest point; the pendants are 1.75″ long by 5/8″ across at the widest point; the turquoise cabochons are 1-1/16″ long by 1/2″ across at the widest point; the jade cabochons are 3/16″ across (all dimensions approximate).
