Ours is a world of oxide and flame, the only known planet on which fire is possible and one in which weathering of that which makes its surface creates extraordinary beauty. With these earrings, Wings pays tribute in beautifully spare traditional form to the oxide minerals that make up most of the Earth’s crust, and to the elemental forces of heat and pressure, weather and time, that turn them into layers of ethereal smoke and fire and light. Each dangling drop is built around a near-perfect oval cabochon of tiger iron, a compound material formed of golden tiger’s eye, flame-red jasper, and the cool metallic gray of natural hematite, all compressed in banded layers and fused seamlessly together over time on a geologic scale. Each is set into a low-profile scalloped bezel, displaying as much of each stone’s surface as possible, then edged with a fine, slender strand of twisted silver. Organic hand-rilled tabs extend from the top center of each bezel backing, and hold sterling silver coil-and-ball-bead French wires securely. Earrings hang 1″ long, excluding wires, by roughly 3/4″ across at the widest point; cabochons are 3/4″ long by 9/16″ across at the widest point [all dimensions approximate].
