Indigo Suns and Early Spring Blues

Indigo Suns Earrings

At the end of a week of early spring, of bright light and warming winds, today we bring you one of Wings’s latest works, completely only days ago: a pair of earrings in the indigo of the sky, cobalt tongues of flame burning outward into fiery amber orbs.

They are fitting for this season that has arrived much too early: the colors of dawn and dusk, of sun and storm — an elemental wedding of the most powerful of the sky spirits. They’re also one of my favorites among his current inventory.

I love the blues; always have, always will. But not all blues are equal. The jewel tones — cobalt, indigo, the deeper-than-turquoise shade of a bluebird’s wings and the cornflower sky more intense than any flower’s petals — these are the blues that speak to my spirit. And these blues are both raindrops and fire, the intense shade of the skies that extend far beyond our sight.

But it’s not just the lapis; it’s the amber, too. There’s something elemental, fundamental about melding sun and sky, fire and rain. These earrings combine the two in one flowing, radiant form, the pure flame of blue and gold. From their description in the Earrings Gallery here on the site:

Indigo Suns Earrings

They say the hottest fire is the one that burns blue. Here, a pair of brilliant tongues of flame, indigo teardrops like rain from the farthest reaches of the sky, explode into fiery amber orbs, small suns emerging from the blue. Each earring begins with a high-domed lapis lazuli cabochon, cut into smooth, elegant drops of cobalt blue descending from stiletto points. Wings has set them into gently scalloped bezels and trimmed them with delicate twisted silver. At the bottom of each drop are more fire: three bits of brilliant golden amber, simultaneously rays of the blue and their own self-contained suns. Each earring hangs 1.25″ in overall length; the lapis cabs are 1″ long by 3/8″ across at the widest point; the round amber cabs are 1/8″ across.

I said at the outset of the week that — unlike most people — I don’t get the winter blues; for me, that’s a phenomenon of spring. But this year, the early arrival of warmer weather is a special gift.

It’s a time of clouds and fire and indigo suns — thee best kind of spring blues.
