We awakened this morning to a beautiful day: a pond full of water; wildflowers blooming along the west side of the house.
It finally feels safe to say, aloud, that spring is here.
There will be much more cold, of course — probably more snow, too. But nearly all the trees have begun to leaf; our world has already gone green. The warm-weather birds have begun to arrive even as the year-round inhabitants are busy nesting. Spring at last feels real, and summer now more promise than hope.
Hope is medicine, and promises, too, but now we are granted the first such medicine in real time: Clusters of giant dandelions dot the grass, and brilliant magenta petals are flowering wild across the earth.
Today’s featured work embodies the shape of these tiny wild blossoms perfectly, bold and graceful and insistent on adding their medicine to our world. From its description in the relevant section of the Bracelets Gallery here on the site:
Medicine Flowers Cuff Bracelet
Flowers heal us, body and spirit, and teach us that beauty is medicine. Wings combines two patterns in this hand-milled textured cuff to create a bracelet of medicine flowers: petals and rain, shadows and light, all evoking a ’60s Flower Power vibe. The lines are laid down first, long slender columns in a positive/negative alternating pattern, studded here and there with raindrops. Above the lines, stylized daisy and sunflower petals blossom and dance.. The band is buffed to a soft Florentine finish, and stretches 6.5″ long by 1-1/8″ across (dimensions approximate). At the moment, our whole existence feels blessed: blue skies, warm sun, a still-gentle breeze, green everywhere upon the earth. It’s a sensation that manages to be simultaneously serene and expectant, as though this gentle air still holds the promise of excitement, of bright and brilliant things to come.
And come they shall, the dragonflies and the butterflies and the hummingbirds, all the fierce bright spirits of warm winds and long light, here to bring their own medicine to a flowering wild earth.
With the open petals and the water in the pond, we shall see some of them before the day is out.
