At the Heart of the Day

It finally feels like spring.

There is still an icy edge to the wind, still an embrasure of heavy clouds all the way around the horizon. But the air has that unmistakable feel of incremental warming, and yesterday’s rain, sleet, and snow have fostered lush new green everywhere this morning.

Today’s forecast is listed as “partly cloudy,” and at the moment, it is most certainly that, and more. But a few moments ago, the sun was out and shining brilliantly, clouds by turns edged in gold and silver, with the feel of a warm red fire at the heart of the day. It is early still, a world not quite yet at the square of the sun, but the warmth is suddenly a tangible thing.

It’s a perfect day, too, to adorn with a little sunny fire in other ways. Today’s featured work embodies the colors of the flame, the warmth and illumination of the orb itself. From its description in the Rings Gallery here on the site:

The Square of the Sun Ring

The sun is no more square than the stone, but both make it possible to believe in a world with four corners. Wings summons angles at the square of the sun and the spirit of this ancient light in this ring, a sharply angular, yet high-domed rectangle of blood-red carnelian set upon a band of hammered silver light. The band is cut freehand in his signature scalloped design, then hammered by hand to give it a shimmering vintage look and feel. The carnelian cabochon, glossy and slightly translucent, hints at hidden depths as it rests securely in a scalloped bezel. The band is 1/2″ wide at the widest point and 5/16″ across at the narrowest point; the stone is 3/4″ long by 1/2″ wide (dimensions approximate). Sizeable. Other views shown at the link.

Of Wings’s recent inventory of Wings, this has always been one of my favorites. I love the gentle, flowing asymmetry of the band, the shimmering hammer-work, the fire of the focal stone. It’s the color of the sun, and of lifeblood, too — the center of our lives, of our world, the very heart of our days.

And as this day goes grayer, the dampness beginning to seep in, a little fire, and a little heart, will go a long way to keep us warm.
