A Line of Infinite Light

Some days, there’s really only one choice for a featured work. And it doesn’t matter that we’ve highlighted it relatively recently here; it’s simply the one that suits the week best.

That will be the case today.

In light of the season, here, one of annual pilgrimage, our influences this week are lines and shadows, trails and paths, boundaries and spaces and the ways in which we find and follow them. It’s fitting on other levels, too; despite the date on the calendar, it’s fall here, all cold mornings and clear skies and sharp-edged winds.

It’s a time of year when the shadows fall long and stark upon the earth, and when the air’s otherworldly clarity throws every ridgeline, every inch of horizon into sharp relief.

In other words, it’s a time when the world itself is manifest in lines and light, all caught and held by Wings in today’s featured work. From its description in the relevant section of the Bracelets Gallery here on the site:

Horizon Cuff Bracelet

The horizon divides earth from sky, but does not interrupt the light. Wings pays tribute to all three cosmic spirits with this hand-milled sterling silver cuff. The band is twelve-gauge silver, solid and substantial but not heavy, filed and buffed to a silky smooth finish on the underside. Across the top, the silver is coaxed into sharp relief in a single “horizon” line that runs its entire length, just slightly off-center: broader expanse of silvered sky above, a more slender slice of shimmering earth below, all polished to a glowing mirror-like finish. Cuff is 6-1/4″ long by 5/16″ across (dimensions approximate).

Right now, the light at sunset is all warm tones, gold and amber and coral, rose and crimson and plum. At dawn, though? At dawn, silver reigns, a perfect clear light that turns the treetops along the ridgeline to diamonds.  The horizon, whether flat mesa or tallest peaks, becomes its own portal, its own magical line of demarcation between this world and others, those where the ancestors long since walked on now watch over us and protect us, where the spirits dwell and occasionally invite us to join them, for a moment, through the window of visions and the door of dreams.

From our small earthbound vantage point, the horizon seems like a line, a fixed point upon the world.

In reality, it’s an aperture, an opening of earth and sky.

The horizon is a line of infinite light.
