A Geometry of Spheres, of Warmth and Light

Today has dawned almost entirely clear, the only evidence of yesterday’s wildfire smoke a faint haze on the western horizon. Today, we can see the peaks again, and it’s possible to breathe mostly uninterrupted.

Yesterday’s sunrise was muted, a gray-gold veil of suffocated light. By last night, as hoped, the wind had shifted, the setting moon robed in warm amber. This morning, the moon lent its shawl to the sun, the skies glowing with that gentle peach fire peculiar to the warmest days of summer here, the rising light shimmering spreading outward behind the peaks as though carried on a dragonfly’s wings.

Today’s featured work is dragonfly and sun alike, rising dawn infused with a bit of last night’s moonset and the glimmer of long-distant stars, too. From its description in the Earrings Gallery here on the site:

A Dance For the Dawn Earrings

The warmer winds bring Dragonfly, here to perform a dance for the dawn, wings ashimmer in the light. Wings captures the soft glow of a summer sunrise with these earrings embodying the small summer spirit of flight. Each dragonfly is formed of a length of slender but solid sterling silver triangle wire, meticulously hand-stamped down the length of its curving spine to create a body as reflective as that of its living counterpart, and as agile and motion-filled, too. The wings are cut freehand and milled in a lined pattern that evokes both summer rains and rays of light. At the top, each small spirit’s head is formed of a cabochon of beautifully gentle peach moonstone, their color as fragile as the first rays of dawn light. Each earring dances from sterling silver wires via a single silver jump ring. Earrings hang 2.5″ long (excluding wires) by 1.75″ across at the widest point; cabochons are 3/16″ across (dimensions approximate).

It’s a geometry of spheres, of warmth and light that nurture our world now: rising sun and setting moon in an elaborately simple dance, an exchange of light and color; velvet skies set with diamonds by night and the shimmer of silvery wings by day.

By tomorrow — by later today, even — the winds may have shifted yet again. The smoke may return; the rain most certainly will, if not immediately. Official summer remains just shy of two weeks off, and a faint chill still rides the winds; it is not yet warm enough to do entirely without a fire.

But the small spirits of summer are here: the tiny birds, the honeybees, the butterflies and dragonflies. And with them comes a gift of season and sky, our one constant now: a gift of closing distances and softer angles, of a world of warmth and light.
