To Fill the Heart With Fire and Light

SunHearts Necklace and Earrings Set

It’s the last weekend before Valentine’s Day. On a practical level, it means that tomorrow is the last possible day for overnight shipping to deliver in time for the day devoted to romance.

Here, on a bitterly cold and windy day with a thin rime of snow still on the shaded areas of the ground, it’s a chance for some imagery to warm body and soul alike.

Yes, that’s right: The forecast was partially accurate. Instead of the predicted one to three inches, we averaged a half-inch across our small bit of earth, from about an inch here at the house to a mere dusting around the edges of the land. Most of it is gone now, having melted off by midday, but the cold air is brutal.

It’s a time to be indoors by the fire.

It’s also a time to appreciate the warming properties of the heart — the literal organ’s role in keeping the body sufficiently heated, and its symbolic counterpart’s ability to light a fire in the soul. Today’s featured works (actually a pair, an informal collection in miniature) summon both sorts of warmth with a series of scarlet hearts lit by the sun. The first piece in the set, complementary and yet able to stand alone, its constituent parts sold individually, is the necklace, designed to permit its heart to overlay the wearer’s own. From its description in the Necklaces Gallery here on the site:

Sunlit Heart Necklace Closeup

Sunlit Heart Necklace

A sunlit heart is warm even on the coldest days. Wings adds a little fire to the winter with a necklace in sizzling reds and golds. The focal point is a heart-shaped cabochon of brilliant apple coral of. truly phenomenal size, a mysterious whorl of flame-hued scarlet, crimson, amber, gold, and bronzed, all aswirl in a beautifully beveled stone, held in the close embrace of a scalloped bezel. The bezel is edged in twisted silver, and hangs suspended from a bail of delicately flowered pattern wire. A diminutive sun in the form of a single small round cabochon of fiery amber accents the base of the bail, nestled in the cleft above the heart. The pendant falls beautifully from a 20″ sterling silver snake chain. Pendant is 2-1/4″ long, including bail; apple coral cabochon is 1-5/8 ” long by 1-1/2″ across at the widest point; amber cabochon is 3/16″ across; bail is 5/8″ long by 5/16″ across (dimensions approximate). Necklace coordinates with Sundance Hearts earrings, found in the Earrings Gallery. Other views of pendant shown at the link.

But the wonderful thing about love is that it not only warms and illuminates; it fills the soul with joy. A spirit touched by love can dance in the light of the sun even on the coldest days. And this is the motif around which the second work in the series is wrought, a pair of earrings adance in the coral and amber shades of the sun itself. From their description in the Earrings Gallery here at the site:

The journey of the light lives in sundance hearts. Wings evokes Father Sun’s daily dance across the sky, the love and warmth it represents, with earrings aflame in coral and amber. The hearts themselves are wrought in beautifully beveled heart-shaped cabochons of brilliant apple coral, each stone aswirl with reds and oranges and metallic whorls of flame. Each heart rests gently but firmly in a scalloped bezel trimmed in twisted silver, and each is held fast in the embrace of three equally fiery amber cabochons, the sun’s illuminating rays extending outward in a graceful dance. The round amber cabochons are set into small sawtoothed bezels soldered securely to the cleft in the top of the heart and to the inward slope of either side. Apple coral cabochons are 1-1/8″ long by 1″ across at the widest point; amber cabochons are 3/16″ across (dimensions approximate). Earrings coordinate with Sunlit Heart necklace found in the Necklaces Gallery. View of earrings with necklace shown above and at the link.

The crimson fire of the hearts is warming enough; to see them nestled in the brace of three small amber suns only adds light to the flames. And it’s fitting, given that the apple coral that forms each heart is a product of fire itself, sherds and dust of natural coral heated until they meld together to preserve that which is now scarcer than love itself.

In a winter far too warm, we have been reminded today that it is winter nonetheless. In this season of romance, it is a time to fill the heart with fire and light, to dance in the joy of its warm illumination.
