The Sun Remains

Dawn, and there is no sunrise; earth and sky remain an unrelieved expanse of gray.

Three hours hence, and it will have been a week since a little golden light was extinguished from our small world here. It seems fitting, somehow, that we should be awaiting the next next storm’s pale silence.

And yet, the clouds are a gift. So, too, will the snow be — never more so, in fact, in our lifetimes, coming on the heels of last year’s deadly and deepening drought. Still, it’s hard not to miss the sunrise, radiant golden light ascending the peaks to wash over the valley like a blessing, invocation and benediction in one.

Fortunate we are, then, all of us, that our inability to see the sun holds no bearing on its power. These dawn hours may be gray, but they are still light; the air cold, but still warm enough for life. The sun of this season sits still at a low angle, all hard lines and short duration, but its existence is braided firmly into that of the warmer days to come, a braid like the rope handrail of a bridge by which we ascend our own lives’ summits.

On the stormiest days, in the darkest of night, the sun remains our constant companion, even when perception and place deny us a direct view of it.

Today, then, is a perfect day for our featured work — wings’s own tribute to Father Sun’s power and presence in our lives. From its description in the relevant section of the Bracelets Gallery here on the site:

Braided Suns Cuff Bracelet

We live in a world of braided suns, a sacred hoop of the seasons strung around orbs of golden light. Wings honors the sun in all its angles and phases with this cuff, heavy nine-gauge sterling silver annealed to a velvety finish, hand-stamped in arcing conjoined sunrise patterns set opposite each other to form braids of light. Round tiger’s eye cabochons, brilliantly chatoyant and infused with rich color gradients from deep bronzed brown to bright yellow gold, are set into saw-toothed bezels equidistant along the band’s length, a sun for each season in varying shades of dark and light. The edges of the band are hand-filed silky-smooth, and the inner band is adorned with arced sunrises chased along either edge, then linked across the band’s expanse by diagonal shafts of light erupting at the center in flowering radiance, the flowing lines all hand-struck to be meticulously equidistant and at identical angles. The band is 6.5″ long by 3/8″ across; the cabochons are 9/16″ across (dimensions approximate). Views of sides and inner band shown below.

The omnipresence of the forces that keep our world alive, and us with it, hold lessons for us in other ways. They remind us of the power of Spirit, and of spirits, and of the capacity for love that transcends simple planes of existence. Like the year’s suns, our own spirits are braided together in an unbroken hoop of history and ancestry and identity. They are bridge and handrail both, the path before us and behind us and the guide along the way.

Our own small golden spirit was such a guide. Like the sun, she is beyond our reach now, but her own reach is that much greater for it. Midwinter, and we live secure in the knowledge that the sun remains. So, too, do the spirits, our links to them and to each other.
