Spirits of Passion and Fire

SunHearts Necklace and Earrings Set

May dawned warm and bright. Yesterday was absolutely beautiful, the best spring here has to offer — if you ignore the mini-twister that ripped through our land and destroyed a chunk of our stable.

It may not be the best spring here has to offer, but it’s certainly the most archetypal. High winds, extreme weather, rapid swings in temperature and conditions — these are the hallmarks of spring in this place.

Fortunately, we are now moving into the season’s downward slope toward summer, when the air begins to warm more consistently and it’s possible to believe that we are truly leaving winter behind. Not entirely, of course — it’s possible for the mercury to swing fifty degrees over the course of a day at any time of year here — but by yesterday, both the land and the seasonal spirits who inhabit it had mostly donned robes of brilliant color. The land is mostly lush and green, plant life blossoming with fiery petals in the colors of love and passion.

And yesterday, as we labored to clear away the destruction left in the twister’s wake, the first dragonfly of the year buzzed past my face, dancing on the arc of the sunlight.

Fittingly, it was a red rock skimmer, body and wings aflame in the same crimson and amber shades as today’s featured works.

I say “works,” plural, because today we highlight a collection in miniature, an informal “set” comprising necklace and earrings that were created specifically to complement each other. As is Wings’s custom, he elected not to make them a perfect match, permitting each work to stand fully on its own. But despite their unique identities (and in keeping with those identities, they are sold separately), they are clearly designed to coordinate with each other, and find their fullest expression worn together.

We begin with the necklace. From its description in the Necklaces Gallery here on the site:

Sunlit Heart Necklace Closeup

Sunlit Heart Necklace

A sunlit heart is warm even on the coldest days. Wings adds a little fire to the winter with a necklace in sizzling reds and golds. The focal point is a heart-shaped cabochon of brilliant apple coral of. truly phenomenal size, a mysterious whorl of flame-hued scarlet, crimson, amber, gold, and bronzed, all aswirl in a beautifully beveled stone, held in the close embrace of a scalloped bezel. The bezel is edged in twisted silver, and hangs suspended from a bail of delicately flowered pattern wire. A diminutive sun in the form of a single small round cabochon of fiery amber accents the base of the bail, nestled in the cleft above the heart. The pendant falls beautifully from a 20″ sterling silver snake chain. Pendant is 2-1/4″ long, including bail; apple coral cabochon is 1-5/8 ” long by 1-1/2″ across at the widest point; amber cabochon is 3/16″ across; bail is 5/8″ long by 5/16″ across (dimensions approximate). Necklace coordinates with Sundance Hearts earrings, found in the Earrings Gallery. View of necklace with coordinating earrings shown at top.

The earrings are not quite identical in design, but they are wrought from the same substance and shapes, the same shades and spirit. From their description in the Earrings Gallery here on the site:

Sundance Hearts Earrings

Sundance Hearts Earrings

The journey of the light lives in sundance hearts. Wings evokes Father Sun’s daily dance across the sky, the love and warmth it represents, with earrings aflame in coral and amber. The hearts themselves are wrought in beautifully beveled heart-shaped cabochons of brilliant apple coral, each stone aswirl with reds and oranges and metallic whorls of flame. Each heart rests gently but firmly in a scalloped bezel trimmed in twisted silver, and each is held fast in the embrace of three equally fiery amber cabochons, the sun’s illuminating rays extending outward in a graceful dance. The round amber cabochons are set into small sawtoothed bezels soldered securely to the cleft in the top of the heart and to the inward slope of either side. Apple coral cabochons are 1-1/8″ long by 1″ across at the widest point; amber cabochons are 3/16″ across (dimensions approximate). Earrings coordinate with Sunlit Heart necklace found in the Necklaces Gallery. View of earrings with necklace shown at top.

The earrings themselves remind me a bit of the skimmer, too: flame-red hearts dancing in the embrace of amber light, as though held aloft by small golden wings. They evoke, too, the fiery petals now flowering all over the land, from tulips to tree blossoms.

Today’s works capture that intensity, too: of color, of texture, of imagery and depth. Symbolic first and foremost of romantic love, they nonetheless also embody love of a different sort — of and for the Earth, manifest in the renewal and return of the spirits of warmer winds.

It’s no coincidence that Dragonfly is a symbol of romantic love. He is a messenger, too, and today’s featured collection bears its own message and identity: Like yesterday’s dragonfly, they are spirits of passion and fire.
