Green Jewels Wrapped In Gold

It rained last night, long and hard — and the only reason we know that is the mud and the water pooled everywhere this morning, such are the soundproofing qualities of adobe construction. For a time this morning, it seemed as though we might get more, but the lowering gray clouds have retreated now to embrace the peaks, leaving plenty of room overhead for a sun now climbing high in the sky.

The rain, though, has made our world just that little bit greener than it was yesterday, the grass standing a little taller, the leaves a little fuller and more open. Now, with the autumnal angles of the light and the day’s new-found clarity of air, the earth here is a collection of green jewels wrapped in gold.

It’s a fitting metaphor for today’s featured work, one of Wings’s newest. It’s a cuff wrought in the shapes of such summer as remains, in the shades of this threshold season of greens and golds. From its description in the relevant section of the Bracelets Gallery here on the site:

Light Medicine Cuff Bracelet

Summer is the season of light medicine, the mysteries of the storm and the gifts of the sun and the new life breathed in and out by the leaves of tree and wildflower. Wings calls the light, the breath, and the blossoms to dance together across the surface of this cuff bracelet. The band is hand-milled in a random floral pattern, petals spiraling in great looping whorls around the pistils, edges rising in sharp relief. At the center sits a single bold round cabochon of green-gold Labradorite, fantastically iridescent with the internal glow of sun and storm. The focal cab is flanked on either side by smaller orbs, a pair of luminous round citrine cabochons like tiny suns; at either end sits a round jade cabochon, glowing green with the very breath of summer. Each cab is bezel-set in sterling silver; dual scalloped patterns formed of chained crescent moons linked by tiny hoops trace either edge of the inner band. The band itself  is 6″ long X 11/16″ across; Labradorite focal cabochon is 7/16″ across; citrine and jade cabs are 5/16″ across (dimensions approximate).

This is, perhaps, my favorite of all of Wings’s current inventory of bracelets. It’s not merely the elements, nor the way they are constituted and combined. It’s not just the symbolism, either, although I have had reason these last few days to be reminded anew of the greens of traditional medicine, substances of such great inherent value as to be jewels beyond price. It’s not even the way this design and these stones, in particular, catch and channel the light.

Rather, it’s all of these things, and more — some nameless, indescribable spirit that infuses the piece, especially at this time of year when its colors likewise infuse our whole world.

I look out and see this work in the world visible outside the window: the late wildflowers, revived in the rain, petals still edged with silver drops; trees and grass and red willow standing stronger, straighter, breathing more deeply of the clear sharp air; the earth awash in splashes of sunlight, the magic and medicine of green jewels wrapped in gold.

This is our world before the cold winds come, before the snow flies: more beautiful, and more valuable, than any amount of money.
